Al's Corner Store at 2894 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York.

Don't be fooled; this place is not just another corner store. It's something inexplicably special. "Large, bright, clean" are the first three words that come to mind. You might be surprised to find a wide assortment of lesser-known candies, snacks, carbonated beverages, juices and teas, along with a nice prepared foods section. The subs are made to order on fresh rolls. I like to go for a vegetarian option, loading it up with several high-quality cheeses, some fresh veggies and a good oil/ vinegar dressing.

The egg salad sandwiches are perhaps the best I've had anywhere, served on a hearty rye bread. You'll also find salads with a wider assortment of veggies than the typical wilted iceberg lettuce with a single tomato slice found at so many other little shops. These usually include a tossed garden salad, fruit salad, and a few others.

There are donuts, fantastic custard-filled eclairs (some of the best I've had anywhere!), spicy pickles, a limited selection of fresh produce, frozen dinners, boxes of pasta, rice, cooking oil etc. Also, some inexpensive home appliances and clothing.

Al's is right near Kenmore Mercy Hospital, so there's usually a lot of traffic. The customers tend to be friendly and talkative, and the staff are very welcoming. I wish it were open later, but I understand their reasons for closing when they do.

One more thing to mention: Just a block or so away is lovely little Thurston Park, complete with some picnic tables, a basketball court, a small grill, playground for the kids, and some big, shady trees. If you visit Al's in the spring or summer, my suggestion is to pick up a sandwich and bag of chips, head over to the park and enjoy your meal outside!
